Security forces in Bahrain have arrested a member of the nation’s main opposition group, al-Wefaq

Hussein Sehwan, who has been a representative of the al-Wefaq National Islamic Society, was arrested ahead of a meeting with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay.

The meeting between the UN envoy and Bahrain’s civil society groups was scheduled for Thursday evening.

Al-Wefaq has condemned the arrest, blaming the regime for targeting what it calls the freedom of opinion and expression. The group says Sehwan has been arrested for participating in the February 15th anti-government rallies.

Syria

The Syrian army has launched an offensive in the strategic Qalamoun region to retake the town of Yabrud from al-Qaeda-linked militants.

Security sources say the army is advancing around the town and is expected to take control of it soon.

Yabrud has been under the control of militants since 2011.

It is the last major town in the Qalamoun region, which the army is fighting to retake.

Greater Tunb and Lesser Tunb are two small islands in the eastern Persian Gulf, close to the Strait of Hormuz. They lie at some 12 kilometers from each other and 20 kilometers south of the Iranian island of Gheshm. The islands are administered by Iran as part of its province of Hormozgan, but are also claimed by UAE as a territory of the Emirate of Ras al-Khaimah.

Greater Tunb has a surface of 10.3 km². It is known for its red soil. There are conflicting descriptions about its population: While some sources state there are between a few dozen and a few hundred inhabitants, others describe the island as having no native civilian population. There is reported to be an Iranian garrison and naval station, a fish storage facility and a red-soil mine.

Lesser Tunb has a surface of 2 km² and is uninhabited with the exception of a small airfield, harbor, and entrenched Iranian military unit. The toponymy of Tonb is in all likelihood of Persian origin. In the local Persian dialect(s) of southern Persia, the noun tonb, with its diminutive tonbu, as it applied to Lesser Tonb, means "hill" or "low elevation" . The terms have the same meaning in the larger Dari Persian language system; this explains in part the traces of tonb and tonbu in the toponyms found in the Bushehr and Lengeh regions, some 300 miles (480 km) apart.

The ownership of Iran on Abu Musa has been disputed by UAE. the dispute between Iran and UAE started on 1974 three years after establishment of UAE. From 1908, the UK controlled the island along with the other British-occupied islands in the Persian Gulf, including what is today the UAE. In the late 1960s, Britain transferred administration of the island to the British-appointed Sharjah, one of the seven sheikdoms that would later form the UAE. after Britain announced in 1968 that it would relinquish its hegemony in the Persian Gulf, Iran moved to reattach the island politically to the mainland. In November 30 1971 (two days before the official establishment of UAE), IRAN and Sharjah signed a Memorandum of Understanding. They agreed to allow Sharjah to have a local police station and Iran pay 1.5-million lira for nine years to station it's troops on the island. one day before the UK's officially leave the region Iran stationed its troops on the island and was welcome with the Sheik of Sharjah's brother; Sheik Saghar; officially. In 1980, the UAE took its claim to the United Nations. But it was rejected by the UN security council, and the issue was closed. In same year, Saddam Hussein attempted to justify the Iraq-Iran war by claiming that one of the objectives was to "liberate" Abu Musa, Greater Tunb, and Lesser Tunbin Persian Gulf. In 1992, Iran expelled foreign workers who operated the UAE-sponsored school, medical clinic, and power-generating station. In 2012 a visit to the island by Iranian president Ahmedinejad provoked a diplomatic incident. Iran refer to the historical fact that the ownership of Iran over the islands roots back to Elam, Medes, Achaemenid, Parthian and Sassanid Empire and Persianpax Era and claims it was occupied by the UK and refers to the the agreement between Iran and emirate of Sharjah at 1971. UAE refer to 1971 agreement, and says Iran has acted against the deal and has taken control of the whole island.

Countries with a coastline on the Gulf consist of: Iran to the north, Part of Oman to the east, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar to the south, Saudi Arabia to the southwest, and Kuwait and Iraq to the northwest. Various small islands also lie within the Gulf.

Gulf Location: One of the most critical bodies of water, is positioned in the heart of the Middle East. Located in southwestern Asia, it separates the Arabian Peninsula from Iran (formerly called Persia). It connects with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea through the Strait of Hormuz, which is 48 to 96 Km wide. Its coastal areas are the world's largest single source of crude oil. Therefore powerful naval forces from several countries remain in its waters to protect the flow of oil to the rest of the world, especially considering that the it supplies most of the world's energy needs.

Why Persian Gulf?

  • Used in most of the maps from long time ago so there is no need to change the name. It has been and will always remain the Persian Gulf
  • Used by United Nations in their documents
  • It's a historical name
  • On almost all maps printed before 1960, and in most modern international treaties, documents and maps, this body of water is known as the "Persian Gulf".
  • Arabian gulf means the Red Sea so the "Arabian gulf" name may create confusion with the Red sea so it's better to use the name Persian gulf
  • If the Arabian Gulf gets it's name from the fact that more Arab countries are surrounding it, then India Ocean should also change its name because India has a smaller border with it than other countries

Why Arabian Gulf?

  • Used by the Arab League
  • Used by United Nations in their Arabic documents and Arabic Language is an official language in the United Nations
  • The name "Persian gulf" is linked to the Persian empire that does not exist any more. As Mediterranean sea used to be called Roman Sea
  • Iran does not mean Persia, Iranian people consist of Persians, Arabs, Azeri, Turkmen, Kurds, Gilakis, Mazandaranis, Lurs, and Baluchis
  • The people who live around the gulf are mostly Arabs so by demography it should be called Arabian Gulf
  • There are 6 Arabic countries around the gulf but Iran is alone and 70% of the coast line is under Arabic countries

Nothing the US claims about what happened in Syria adds up. We are being asked to believe an illogical story, when it is much more likely that it was Israel and Saudi Arabia who enabled the Obama Administration to threaten Syria with war.

Belgian teacher Pierre Piccinin and Italian journalist Domenico Quiric, both of whom were abducted and held hostage for several months in Syria, say they overheard in an exchange between their captors that foreign-backed militants were behind the recent chemical attack.

Tehran, YJC. Clergy has said that Iran will be rather happy if the US attacks Syria .
Jafar Shojouni, member of the Combatant Clergy Society said in interview with Qanoon " We are against an attack on Syria but deep down our hearts there are else things and we would rather like it if the US made that mistake. Because on one hand Russia will target Arabia and on the other Hezbollah and Iran will strike Tel Aviv and we will wipe Israel off the face of the earth."

He added " Iran believes that the US wants to scuffle Syria for Israel and on the other hand UN inspectors have not said anything . "

" We are against the war but deep down our hearts we' d rather be happy if that happens . Although our country will be severely damaged we will manage to finish the job by eradicating Israel, Inshallah. "

Tehran, YJC. Former IAEA Director General expresses his ideas on Syria and reasons for a probable US attack.

Former head of the International Atomic Energy Agency Hans Blix in a phone call interview with Neday Enghelab discussed his views on the current Syrian situations and the odds that the US might launch a military attack on the country.

Neday Enghelab: What is the use of the inspection teams if they [the US] do not have enough time to listen to the reports?

Blix: Yes. I think there’s a certain amount of disrespect for the United Nations and for mechanisms that are set up by consensus in the Security Council. That is to regret. Though, I think that the whole world will be interested in hearing all the inspectors in Syria have found out. I think it will also be interesting for the world to hear the evidence of the United States. It may be quite interesting, but of course it is one of the factors and we have more confidence in impartial international evidence. Nevertheless, US evidence is also of value and of course they will look also into the question who has in fact used chemical weapons. The inspectors do not have a mandate looking at who has used the weapons.

Larijani has condemned the hostile acts performed by some Middle Eastern states against Syria

In his parliamentary speech on Sunday, Ali Larijani said "The news of the past few days come from America’s warmongering thoughts. London and Washington agitations for damaging Syria still go on,” Fars reports

The Speaker of the Majlis asserted "What is interesting is that UN investigators have not yet completed their investigations on the application of chemical weapons and have not declared the results when US officials say that the use of chemical weapons is clear to everyone and they take that as the permission for attack. Do you abide by the same rule elsewhere as well to act according to the public opinion”

"Some regional countries promised the US to pay for the costs of the military operations. This is the most tormenting part of the story where an Islamic-claimant country turns into a broker for US warmongering with the cooperation of Zionist intelligence,” Larijani exclaimed

Larijani questioned America’s double standards in not abiding the rule of the Security Council while maintaining elsewhere that the council’s order must be respected by all. "Such devious behavior has become the root of disorder and insecurity on the international scene,” he asserted

He added "Since the US and its allies were unable to change the game by sending terrorists and weapons, they came out of their backstage and are now playing on stage, leading the war”
